THE MONSTER PROJECT
The Monster Project is a personal undertaking I began in 2010. With a decreasing emphasis on the arts in school, the project is meant to help children recognize the value of their ideas and make them feel excited about the potential of their own minds.
I completed the first round of the project on my own. I asked the students in a second grade class from Faubion Elementary in Austin, Texas to draw monsters. Then, I took their imaginings and brought them to life in my own illustration style. Finally, I visited their classroom to return the original monsters along with the new versions and to talk to the kids about the importance of creativity!
Since then, the project has grown exponentially. This year, over 120 artists from all over the world joined together to reimagine monsters drawn by elementary students from schools in Austin and Dallas. They created beautiful artworks of all kinds for the kids–from posters to 3D printed figurines to sculptures and even a hand-crafted skateboard. The support has been overwhelming and truly inspiring.
